Catalogue Note
As a pupil of Gérôme and Boulanger in Paris, Sabattier was an active member of the Societé des Artistes Français. He exhibited primarily marine paintings at the Salons of 1890, 1893, 1894, and 1898. According to the contemporary journal Le Pinceau, Sabattier loved marine subjects and dreamt of becoming a sailor as a child. The artist's love of the sea was evidence of an adventurer's spirit and Sabattier traveled to Russia, Abyssinia, Greece, Palestine, Tonkin, and beyond.
Sabattier later focused on illustration art, and, in doing so, went on to depict all means of transportation including boats, cars, planes, trains, and even tricycles.
