Catalogue Note

As the son of architect Giovanni Canella, Giuseppe first worked with his father to create theater sets. He traveled to Spain and then settled in France between 1823 and 1833. Upon returning to Italy, Giuseppe became a teacher at the Academy of Venice. This is where he created his reputation as a "vedutist", or miniaturist painter of towns and animated streets incorporating topographical elements. Giuseppe's works are typically crowded with groups of people, mixing the elegant bourgeoisie with the working class Parisians.
