Catalogue Note

Pierre Lenordez exhibited at the Salon from 1855 to 1877. A few of these exhibits were figural sculptures, but for the most part he entered animal subjects with a particular emphasis on Arabian stallions. The present group of a mare and stallion was probably inspired by Pierre-Jules MĂȘne's Accolade, which he first exhibited at the Salon of 1852. Both groups reveal a Romantic vision of the affection between the horses alongside a concern for anatomical accuracy.
