Catalogue Note

Hargrove writes that by the 1860s, Carrier Belleuse's style had become more detailed in its execution and surfaces. This is evident in his treatment of the surface of La Source dated 1864.  Carrier offered a l'enfant source in his sales of 1883 and 1887. There is a version of the present terracotta in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art (inv. 1986.67).
