Catalogue Note

Carrier-Belleuse's series of fantasy busts included two models entitled Le Réveil (lot 5) and Le Sommeil, the former showing a beautiful young girl looking to her right with her robe falling over her right breast, while the present model represents a woman with her eyes delicately closed and the drapery on the point of falling off both breasts.

The two busts were an invention that stemmed from commissions Carrier received from Henri Ardant, the director of the Limoges porcelain factory beginning 1854. Their mildly erotic mood is derived from his bust of L'Automne, the version in biscuit being in the Musée Adrien-Debouché, Limoges. Carrier sold a terracotta of the present model at his sale of 1887.
