Catalogue Note

Gardet was the finest animalier sculptor in the generation after Antoine-Louis Bayre.  His subjects tend toward regal and romantic depictions of wild animals.  The present bronze is anachronistic in that the lioness is outside of her natural surroundings, more specifically approaching an imperial guardian lion.  Alternatively known as Foo Dogs, the stone lions are talismans that were placed in the front of sacred temples and imperial residences and offices in China beginning in the Han Dynasty and ending in the early 20th century.  Enhancing the exotic nature of the present bronze is the chinoiserie-inspired colouring of rich reds and golds.  Gardet often experimented with colour in his sculpture by mixing media and through the use of exotic marbles.
