Catalogue Note

Boucher created some of the most sensual images of women in French late nineteenth century sculpture. They range from the Rodinesque Volubilis (see lot 95) showing a dreaming girl emerging from a roughly hewn surround, to the refined Hirondelle blessée exhibited at the Salon of 1898. Le Repos epitomises the erotic aspect in Boucher's oeuvre. It draws inspiration from the Antique as well as French 18th century painting. Boucher's original marble of 1892 was acquired for the Musée de Luxembourg and is now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Pau.  A smaller marble version of the model was sold in these rooms 29th September 1999, lot 369.
