Catalogue Note

Vichi was a Florentine sculptor active in the early 20th century.  In 1927 he executed a War memorial in Firenze-Bersaglieri, but his main activity was as a successful sculptor of decorative marbles and alabaster figurative compositions for a largely overseas market.  Vichi's reputation was enhanced by regular exhibitions. In 1898 he took part in the competition for the monument to Rossini in Santa Croce.  Notable exhibits include Ragazzo (1909), Appuntamento (1919), and Danza (1931).  An unusual aspect of Vichi oeuvre is his animal sculpture. In 1932 he exhibited Tigrettina and Levriero.

The present joyful figure of a nude holding a flower and the following lot representing a nude caught in a wave also by Ferdinando Vichi, epitomise his attractive style.  These figure studies are unencumbered by complicated allegory or mythology. They demonstrate Vichi's consummate skill in composition and execution.
