a single leaf, 180mm. by 120mm., large miniature in an arched compartment, 100mm. by 62mm., showing the Crucifixion, the Virgin on the left, Saint John the Evangelist on the right, bones in the foreground, set below a tree-topped hill, a city beyond, painted in colours and liquid gold above a large initial and 4 lines of text (opening of the Hours of the Cross), full border of coloured flowers and fruit with acanthus leaves and a seated ape gazing at a cockerel, liquid gold ground, verso with 18 lines of text, written-space 113mm. by 62mm., illuminated initials and line-fillers, some smudging of outer edge of border, the miniature in fine condition, foliated ‘70’ in pencil, lightly mounted
Catalogue Note
From the same manuscript as lots 27-28 below. Other leaves belonged to Maggs, Bulletin 24 (2005), nos.38-45, recording that the manuscript had the arms of the families of Aurelle de Villeneuve and Allaneau, of Anjou. It must have been illuminated in Paris, to judge both from the style and the inclusion of Saint Geneviève (see below).
