Catalogue Note

The present lot is especially rare as it both an early example of a 'Datejust' and is left-handed. Rolex produced a limited number of left-handed wristwatches at this time.

The case back of this model is bowed and retains similar design elements to the so-called bubble-back Ovettone.  In later editions of this model, the back would be flattened and made more like current models.

The watch features a Cal. 1065 movement, which debuted at the Basel Fair only two years earlier. It is also interesting to note the small size of the 'Datejust' signature. In later models, this line would be enlarged to a type-set slightly larger than the 'Oyster Perpetual' line.

For an illustration of a similar, but right-handed, example of this model, see Dowling & Hess, The Best of Time - Rolex Wristwatches, p. 237.
