Catalogue Note

There was no subject that Elizabeth understood better than childhood and her paintings and watercolours of children have a sensitivity and delicacy which few of her contemporaries were able to capture. She was able to represent the innocence and verve of her young models without resorting to cloying sweetness. It has been noted that her work captures with 'subtle insight what truly constitutes the beauty of childhood.' (Mrs Lionel Birch, A. Forbes, A.R.A., and Elizabeth Stanhope Forbes, A.R.W.S., 1896, p. 70). The model for the present work was the artist's son Alec.
