Catalogue Note

The Cistercian abbey of Vale Crucis near Llongellen in north Wales was founded in 1201 by Madog ap Gruffudd Maelor. The name means 'Valley of the Cross' and is a reference to Eliseg's Pillar, a 9th century Christian memorial cross, which stands nearby. Despite suffering fire damage as a result of various wars and uprisings, the abbey was one of the richest Cistercian monasteries in Wales (after Tintern Abbey in the south) before the Dissolution in the 16th century. After the Dissolution the buildings fell into disrepair and by the nineteenth century were imposing and romantic ruins.

Alfred de Bréanski exhibited a number of views painted in north Wales at the Royal Academy in 1873 and 1874, including The Valley of the Llugwy, Sunshine and Showers - Llyn-y-Ddinas, A Fall at Pen-y-Benglog and Rhayadr-y-Wennol. Bréanski particularly loved the wildernesses of Wales and even named his house in Lewisham 'Lantysilio'.
