Catalogue Note
In 1899 Troubetzkoy persuaded the famous Russian author to sit for his portrait. During a two-week stay at Tolstoy's estate of Yasnaya Polyana, Troubetzkoy made four variant portraits: a model and life-size versions of the bust and two equestrian portraits. All the Tolstoy portraits were exhibited together at the Venice International Exhibition in 1899 and the following year at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. The Musée du Luxembourg purchased one of the equestrian portraits.
