Konstantin Egorovich Makovsky, 1839-1915

A large number of Makovsky’s works is devoted to images of children. Makovsky painted his own children on numerous occasions. He often depicted them with their mother, as family portraits, in various genre scenes as well as in more intimate works. The offered lot depicts Makovsky’s young daughter Marina, aged around 4 or 5. The magnificent setting is reminiscent of Flemish still-life painting, with deep red drapery, fruits and flowers and, indeed, Makovsky’s contemporaries compared his paintings and virtuosity of execution to those of the Old Masters.
