Catalogue Note

This unidentified work is believed by the Hirshhorn Museum of Washington to portray the noted French woman sailor Virginie Heriot (1890-1932) aged 37, whose father was a partner of the Grands Magasins du Louvre in Paris.  She became a gold medalist in the Olympics of 1928 in Amsterdam and was made a Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur.  Jean-Gabriel Domergue painted her portrait which now hangs at the Naval School in Brest, and a monument sculpted by Raoul Renard was erected in 1933 to her memory on the jetty Albert-Edouard at Cannes.
