Catalogue Note
A particularly significant group of paintings by Stanislav Yulianovich Zhukovsky are devoted to the depiction of provincial Russian estates. They are lyrical, vaguely nostalgic views which capture on canvas a waning tradition. In these paintings the artist sought to depict a harmonious whole which combined both nature and architecture.
The series of paintings by Zhukovsky that treat the theme of the intimate beauty of small provincial estates was begun in 1899 with his painting "Moonlight" [Lunnaya Noch]. These paintings proved popular with the exhibtion going public who fell in love with the subject matter of Russian architecture. Tverskaya Gubernia, with its proliferation of old provincial estates dating from the early 19th century was popular with many arists, especially Zhukovsky. Every Spring, together wtih his artist contemporaries, such as Blianitsky-Birulia, A.V. Moravova, Bogdanov-Belsky, he worked in all of the main locations around Lake Udomlya and Moldino.
