Description

  • diameter: 21.3cm, 8 3/8 in
of shaped circular form, the border enamelled in polychrome strapwork and scrolls, mounted above and below with an Imperial Eagle, the well mounted with a finely cast and enamelled collar of The Order of St Andrew, the badge formed as the Imperial Eagle bearing a blue saltire with the Saint crucified upon it and inscribed: SAPR 'St Andrew, Protector of Russia'

Catalogue Note

The Order of St Andrew the First-Called was established in 1698 by Peter the Great and re-established by the Russian Orthodox Church on 27 December 1988.  As the first and highest order of chivalry, it had only one class although the insignia could be awarded with diamonds as a special distinction.
