The maker's mark SR is recorded as no. 2905, unidentified, circa 1834, in M.M. Postnikova-Losseva et al, L'Orfèvrerie at la bijouterie au XV-XXss, Moscow, 1995. A milk jug of 1837 nearly identical to that of the present lot sold, Sotheby's Geneva, 6 May 1981, lot 320, perhaps with the same maker's mark partially obscured and misidentified in the catalogue entry as "possibly GI".
