Catalogue Note

Franz Krüger (1797-1857), was one of Germany’s most highly respected 19th century artists and favourite portraitist of Nicholas I.  Amongst his many portraits currently in the Hermitage collection are those of Pavel Kiselov, Alexei Orlov and Prince Pyotr Volkonsky all in military uniform.  Perhaps the image he is most remembered for is the striking equestrian portrait of Alexander I. He was particularly admired for his attention to detail, and known for his love of painting horses and military themes.
