Catalogue Note

Anatoly Slepyshev stands out against the canon of non-conformist Russian artists through his emphasis on the renewal of national cultural heritage. Specifically, his work is concerned with the passionate contradictions underpinning Russian religious feeling, often focusing on the opposing themes of sin and repentance.

Typically The Road to Golgotha projects religious imagery with a particularly Russian resonance. The colour and movement of the crowd reflects the folkloric rituals one would expect to see in everyday Russian provincial life.

Slepyshev has exhibited widely on a national and international level. His paintings can be found in numerous Private and National collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow and The State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg as well as abroad in the National Gallery, Berlin and Cologne.
