Catalogue Note
Chana Orloff emigrated from Ukraine to Palestine in 1905, eventually settling in Paris where she studied at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs. She soon became one of the leading figures in the circle of Jewish Russian émigré artists at Montparnasse. Her work was widely exhibited, including at the Salon d’Automne and Salon des Indépendants and Orloff went on to become one of the most successful portraitists in Paris, being awarded the Légion d’Honneur in 1926. She was forced to seek refuge in Switzerland during the last years of the war, only to return in 1945 to find that her studio had been ransacked.
