Catalogue Note
Samuel Granovsky cut a rather unique figure amongst the group of émigré Russian artists living in Paris. Never seen without the Texan hat he had acquired on the set of a film in which he had starred, he was nicknamed the Cowboy of Montparnasse and on several occasions was known to ride horseback through the streets of the French capital.
His subjects were scenes from Parisian life, Russian genre scenes as well as portraits and nudes. In 1942, he was arrested by French Police and deported to Auschwitz, where he was subsequently killed.
