Catalogue Note
Venedikt Nikolaevich Matveev, or Venedikt Mart as he later became known, hailed from Vladivostok, a region at the forefront of Russian Futurist thought.
In 1919 Burliuk moved to Vladivostok and, together with the poets Nikolai Aseev and Sergei Tretyakov and the artist Viktor Palmov, formed the Futurist group 'Tvorchestvo', regularly publishing a journal in collaboration with Mart.
The offered work was executed in 1920, the third of a series of three portraits of fellow Futurists. The other two depict Aseev and his wife.
