Catalogue Note
Borghi taught at the Accademia di Brera in Milan, where he studied as a pupil of Giovanni Strazza. His historicising seated figure of Cola di Rienzi of 1873, exhibited in Paris in 1878, is preserved in the Galleria d'Arte Moderna and shows the influence of Guiseppe Grandi. Borghi produced a large oeuvre of work in both marble and bronze and is best-known for vivacious figures of women such as the present bronze. His interest in costume and detail is typical of Italian 19th century sculpture. The movement and spontenaity of this cast is also distinctive of his work.
