The majestic bird is perched on a rocky stump, its head turned to the right as it searches for its prey whose back is visible from the left side of the rock as it hides inside the crevice.

Works by this artist are extremely rare, only two figural examples appear to be recorded: one of Rokusuke and Kappa, sold in these rooms, 10th June 1977, lot 73 and another of Tamamo no Maye in the W.L. Behrens Collection, no.477, illustrated in George Lazarnick, Netsuke and Inro Artists and How To Read Their Signatures, p.365.
