The traveller stands, holding the leash of a kirin which stands at his back, its head raised, he wears a buttoned coat engraved with broken shippo and a tricorn hat.

Literature

Fernandez Mendez Pinto was a Portuguese traveller who "discovered" Japan in 1543.  Another version of the subject, by Koen, is illustrated in Neil K. Davey, Netsuke, p.42, no.88.
