Description

  • RECUMBENT GOATBY OKATOMO
  • Signed in a slightly raised rectangular reserve Okatomo
  • Ivory, the eyes inlaid
  • 4.4cm., 1 3/4 in.
The goat is shown reclined with its head turned to the rear and bearing an alert expression.  Its mouth is slightly open and its ears are pressed back whilst its legs are folded neatly beneath its slender body for compactness.  The heavy tresses on its body are deeply incised.

Catalogue Note

The signature shows an extra stroke at the side of the character tomo, a feature according to Davey, is believed to denote the best work of Tomotada and Okatomo and apparently omitted from their later pieces.
