Catalogue Note

This and the following eight thankas are from a rare set of the twenty-one forms of the goddess Tara painted on silk in the western Tibetan Guge tradition. Compare very similar bodice type and lower garment decoration in a Tara painting from the region now in the Zimmerman Family Collection; see Pal, 1991, pp. 156-7, no. 89. Compare also with a fifteenth century mural in the Red Temple, Tsaparang, Guge; see Rhie and Thurman, 1999, p. 64, fig. 26.
