Amitabha
distemper on cloth
Western Himalayas

The golden Amitabha Buddha flanked by Padmapani and Vajrapani within a shrine supported by a peacock throne, surrounded by further images of Amitabha depicted in his iconographic colour of red, against a blue flower-filled background, offerings below, with the lower border now fragmentary and the side registers missing.

Compare the geometric composition with a thirteenth century painting collected in 1934 by Dr. Walter Koelz in Po monastery, Spiti, in the western Himalayas, see Klimburg-Salter, 1982, pl. 108, and with a circa eleventh or twelfth century portrait of Rinchen Zangpo, the western Tibetan translator, see Rhie and Thurman, 1997, p. 438-9, no. 191 (60a).
