Catalogue Note

Executed circa 1913-14.
The distant, mist covered hills suggest that the setting for this work is the bay around Dooagh on Achill Island. The closely modulated tones indicate the influence of Whistler which pervades much of Henry’s work at the time. This is almost certainly The Shrimper, a composition that Henry exhibited in Belfast in February 1914.
The present work is numbered 387 in S. B. Kennedy’s forthcoming catalogue raisonné of Paul Henry’s oeuvre.
We are grateful to Dr Kennedy for his assistance with the cataloguing of this lot.
