Catalogue Note

One of Greece's most eminent postwar painters, Tetsis is known for his sensuous, colourful still lifes and landscape paintings, of which the present work is a stunning example. ''He boldly and fearlessly treats colour as a structural and compositional element in the building up of form. He deals with light as being assimilated into colour and texture. A Greek sense of light nourishes his coloured surfaces and brings them to fruition while at the same time this very sense is in turn nourished in his painting, as a corporeal substance. '' (E. Vakalo, quoted in Modern Greek Art - The 20th Century, Athens, 1999, p. 164).
