Catalogue Note

The present work is a study for the monumental painting of the same title in the collection of the Pinakothiki Averoff, Metsovo (see fig. 1)

The Sinking of the Turkish Flagship by Kanaris depicts a strategic battle scheme used by Greek revolutionary figures to attack their Turkish oppressors, which eventually led to the liberation of Greece. The tactic of attaching a small boat laden with explosives (known as a fire ship) to the side of a frigate was used by Kanaris, Papamanolis and Barbatsis in their fight for independance.

The present work will be included in the forthcoming Nikiforos Lytras monograph being prepared by Dr. Nelly Missirli.

We are grateful to Dr. Nelly Missirli for her assistance in the cataloguing of this work.
