Catalogue Note

In the eighteenth century, money boxes were typically made, as in this case, without any provision for removal of the money, and the owner was expected to break the pot when it was full.  They are therefore very rarely found.  In this case, perhaps because of the quality of the object or because of the significance of its date to the owner, the part of the body just below the coin  slot has been carefully broken out and then replaced.
