Catalogue Note

Jan Pieter van Bauerscheit the Elder (1668-1728) was a student of Pieter Scheemakers the Elder in Antwerp. He worked mainly in marble and gritstone, producing a number of pairs of urns decorated with allegorical and mythological subjects. He was also responsible for several groups of putti which are similar in style to these. His initials can be found on a number of pieces including the garden statues of boys at Aldby Park, Yorkshire and some urns in the Rijksmuseum.
