Catalogue Note

This composition is known in a number of versions, of which the prime original is probably the picture in the National Gallery, Prague [1].  In the present version there are differences in the treatment of the head of the Virgin, who has much more hair, and the landscape background, of a high order of quality, is completely different.  At least four further versions are known, none of which John Hand considers autograph.  Among them are different landscape backgrounds, although one, in Indianapolis, closely repeats the Prague picture [2].
