Description

  • overall 31.5 by 24.5cm; the Corpus 16 by 14.7cm
cast in high relief with benign facial expression, the eyes inlaid in glass, the body with pronounced musculature and ribcage, the perizonium knotted in the centre and chased with diaper-edge, applied to Spanish copper cross, cast with beaded border and chased with scrolling vines, inscribed IHS XHS, the reverse chased in the centre with the Paschal Lamb flanked by the letters for Alpha and Omega, the arms chased with scrolling vines, extensive traces of gilding

Catalogue Note

A Limoges cross applied with a similar crucifix figure is recorded by Thoby at the Victoria and Albert Museum (Thoby 1953, cat. no. 59, pl. XXVIII. The reverse of the present cross finds its closest parallels in Spain in the late 12th and early 13th century (Thoby 1953, no. II, pl. XLVI).
