Catalogue Note
In 1988 the maker’s mark was attributed to Isaac Alinck, Haarlem, see K.A. Citroen, Haarlemse Zilversmeden en hun merken, Haarlem, 1988, pp. 34, 87. Isaac was born in 1596 and died between 1655 and 1658. From the records we know that he was a pupil in Utrecht in 1611 (see J. Luijt, Resolutieboeken van het Utrechtse Zilversmedengilde, Utrecht 1997, Vol I, inv 131, 1611 Isack Aliens) and married Willemke Pieters in 1618. Isaac held the position of Warden and Dean of the Guild. An almost similarly engraved beaker by the same silversmith, manufactured in 1641, is illustrated in J. W. Frederiks, Dutch Silver, Vol II, The Hague, 1958, no. 358, plate 158.
