Catalogue Note
In the 17th century beakers engraved with trading vessels were mostly made in VOC cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Delft, Hoorn, Enkhuizen and Middelburg. On this specific beaker, manufactured in Dordrecht however, we also see rather important 17th century trading vessels. Many people highly involved in the VOC, like Mattheus van den Broucke, Cornelis de Witt, Anthonis Repelaer used to live in Dordrecht. These prominent people had much interest in purchasing these kinds of silver beakers, which would emphasise their eminent role in this trading company. The first owner of this beaker most certainly had a strong connection with the VOC.
