the stem decorated with a probably matching figure, engraved with legend Martin Birr Oberster über ein Regiment. Martin Birr Stättmeisster Zu Colmar, Elias Birr Ao. 1600, also engraved with arms below, marked at the rim of bowl (2)
Catalogue Note
Martin Birr, Rat zu Colmar 1575-80 and recorded as Stadtmeister zu Colmar in 1579, married Maria Günster in 1579 and died in 1600. Their son Martin Birr was born on 19th February 1580 in Colmar. We know that he was a doctor in law and captain of the Civic guards in Colmar. In 1611 he married Magdalena Kriegelstein (von Wandelburg) and had four children. In 1660 Martin Birr died at Basel.
