of square form with sixty-four squares carved with alternating small roundels, some with stained ivory ground, within incised circles, with small coloured roundels at each corner, the central lower edge inscribed, Thornhill, Bond Street, London; some minor losses
Catalogue Note
The label is probably that of Walter Thornhill and Co. listed in Kelly's Directory of 1890 as:' cutters, silver-smiths, dressing case, travelling bag, writing case, and desk maker's; specialities, latest novelties for wedding presents etc...by appointment to the Queen and their Royal Highnesses, the Prince and Princess of Wales. Established in 1734 they were based at 144 New Bond Street and at 5 & 6 Little Bruton Street, Westminster.
