COMPARATIVE LITERATURE
Wethey, Titian, vol. II, 1971, p. 205 L-28
This painting is loosely based uponTitian's Sultana or Queen of Persia and was much in vogue as a genre in 17th century Venice. With her Turkish headdress and exotic costume, she has come to represent a fantasy image of an Eastern woman viewed through Westerners' eyes. The rose she holds between her breasts may be a play on words identifying her as Rossa or Rosselana, the favourite wife of Sultan Suleiman Ist.
