Catalogue Note
This picture is a perfect illustration of Anthony van der Croos’ immense talent in the depiction of panoramic views. The horizontal format of the panel, the low horizon point, and the receding scale of the staffage all contribute to the successful rendition of depth within the picture. Van der Croos was influenced by Jan van Goyen, one of the key figures in the development of tonal painting, and in this picture, van Goyen’s impact on van der Croos is particularly strong in the latter’s success in representing atmospheric perspective. However, van der Croos’ generous use of bluish-green tones attests to his artistic independence.
