Catalogue Note
Cornelis Gijsbrechts became an elected member of the painters' Guild in Antwerp in 1659 or 1660. Throughout the 1660's he traveled to Regensburg and Hamburg, among other places, and then settled in Copenhagen circa 1670-72, where he became a prominent painter of still lifes.
The most important collection of Gijsbrechts' works is the group of nineteen pictures in the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen. One of these shares a similar format with the present painting. It is a trompe l'oeil featuring a central canvas above which is inserted a knife (P. Gammelbo, Dutch Still Life from the 16th to the 18th Centuries in Danish Collections, Copenhagen 1960, p. 160, no. 245). This picture also includes a palette, an artist's steadying rod and three miniatures.
