Catalogue Note
William Wood was born in Suffolk, entering the Royal Academy Schools at only sixteen years old in 1785. Wood exhibited at the Royal Academy and British Institution in London from c. 1788-1808, becoming a founder member of the Associated Artists in Water Colour in 1807. Wood was to become President of this Society from 1808-09 and his detailed ledgers remain today a signficant insight into the development of painting upon ivory in the later eighteenth-century.
