Catalogue Note

Sir William Fowle Middleton 2nd Baronet, married Lady Anne Cust, the daughter of the first Earl of Brownlow in 1825. The Middleton's became the owners of Shrubland Park in 1829 the date of these portraits. Largely credited with the creation of Shrubland Park as we see it today, Sir William died in 1860 after a life devoted to the improvement of his estates, foreign tours and the forming of an extensive art collection.

For further detailed information upon the Middleton's development of Shrubland Park during their tenure see James Miller's introduction.
