Catalogue Note
Crosse was evidently commisoned to paint two versions of this portrait. The other version is identical save the sitter is wearing a blue dress (see lot 999).
Richard Crosse won a premium at the Society of Artists and went to London to study, exhibiting at the Society from 1760-1791. He also exhibited at the Free Society of Artists 1761-1766 and the Royal Academy between 1770-1796. Crosse was also to achieve appointment as Painter in Enamel to George III.
