Catalogue Note
The grandson of the marine painter Nicholas Pocock (1740-1821), George Arthur Fripp learnt to paint under the guidance of J.B. Pyne (1800-1870) and S. Jackson (1794-1869). Fripp began his career as a portrait painter but later became better known as a landscape artist. At the time this particular work was painted, Fripp was exhibiting regularly at the Old Watercolour Society, London.
