Catalogue Note

On the 1st June 1813, whilst blockading off Boston, Broke issued a formal challenge to Captain James Lawrence of the American ship Chesapeake. Captain Philip Broke had successfully commanded HMS Shannon for the past seven years and following opening fire, it was not long until Broke and his men had boarded and gained control of the American Ship. News of Broke and his men overpowering the larger American ship greatly improved British morale at home. Another example of this decisive battle can be seen in lot 361 of this sale.
