Catalogue Note
A copy, probably 18th century in date, of the painting by Rembrandt of 1632 now in the Metropolitan Museum, New York (reproduced in Stichting Rembrandt Research Project, A Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings, Dordrecht and Boston 1996, p. 1632, no. A48). The typically English dimensions of the canvas would strongly suggest that the copy was made at the time that the original was in the Methuen Collection at Corsham Court, Wiltshire between 1755 and the early 19th century. The original Rembrandt, however, was to return to Suffolk between 1850 and 1889, when it formed part of the collection of George Tomline of Orwell Park near Ipswich.
