Catalogue Note
The prime version, probably painted in the 1740s, is now in the Musée de Valence, on loan from the Musée du Louvre, Paris (reproduced in F. Arisi, Gian Paolo Panini, Rome 1986, p. 412, no. 363). Other versions, with differing degrees of studio participation are in the Ulster Museum, Belfast and in the Canessa Collection, Rome. Both this and the following lot originally formed part of a set of four paintings attributed to Panini, and as they appear in the inventories for the first time only in 1860, were presumably acquired by Sir William Fowle Middleton, 2nd Bt.(d.1860).
